The Obama Movie Challenge

Ok, let's say that you're a world leader with no international dignitary visiting experience and you accidentally decide to buy 25 DVDs for a visiting world leader. What would they be?

Obama gave Gordon Brown of Britain the thoughtful gift of these DVDs. Which ones would you rather have?

Here is the entire list that he gave:

* Citizen Kane
* The Godfather
* Casablanca
* Raging Bull
* Singin' in the Rain
* Gone with the Wind
* Lawrence of Arabia
* Schindler’s List
* Vertigo
* The Wizard of Oz
* City Lights
* The Searchers
* Star Wars: Episode IV
* Psycho
* 2001: A Space Odyssey
* Sunset Boulevard
* The Graduate
* The General
* On the Waterfront
* It's a Wonderful Life
* Chinatown
* Some Like It Hot
* The Grapes of Wrath
* ET: The Extra-Terrestrial
* To Kill a Mockingbird

I am currently working on my list. It's a work in progress, but it will definitely explain why Obama's list will bore the life out of anyone. At least he didn't include Boyz in the Hood.

Honestly, I have no issue with 99% of the movies that were given...ET and the star wars movie can both go away though...

My list would be something like....(in no particular order)

Duh...The Godfather
Citizen Kane
Schindler's List
Star Trek Undiscovered Country
To Kill A Mockingbird
Dog Day Afternoon
Jaws
Ghandi
The Omen
Cheech and Chong's Next Movie
Rear Window
The Best Years of Our Lives
All About Eve
The Ultimate Gift
Wall-E (it was just fun)
The Right Stuff
Murder By Death
Bridge over the River Kwai
Close Encounters of the Third Kind

And just for shits and giggles..

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

Star Wars has to go? Are you trying to lose friends and alienate people (a movie as well, but alas).

The issue wasn't so much that the list wasn't good, it was just so less than "fun."

As for you, you have a lot of things that I haven't seen, but a good list over a longer period of time. My list seems to focus on the last 20 years with SOME other stuff thrown in for fun. Definitely not the classics, but my favorites.

And if we're giving gifts, why go for the AFI list? It's all about the personal.

My dad would appreciate the Jaws choice.

Glad to see you're still around. I have to find time to get over to your sight and finish the reasons for my list and grade papers... so much to do before Ohio tomorrow.

I forgot the Godfather part two.

Naturally this didn't come to me until after I went to bed.

And yes Star Wars must go...seen it far too many times...Even before when it was just called Star Wars instead of episode 4: A New Hope. ET too..

Another one I forgot to add was Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.

And also between last night and this morning I forgot one other one (it was newer) I was going to add...

Yeah I'm still around...just been busy fighting for computer time.

I was just looking through your list and for the most part I can't disagree with it. Well, except what's up with all movies about baseball?

There are 3 baseball movies on the list. Granted, Ken Burns is actually 10 discs, but other than the Rookie and Bull Durham... The Game Plan is football!
